Propaganda: One and the Same
Although many people believe that propaganda does not exist today, it has a greater impact on one’s life than one could have ever imagined. Propaganda in daily life is most commonly found during times of war, as seen in recruitment posters and stories. In 1984 by George Orwell, there are many examples of propaganda being used by their oligarchical government that are very similar to the multifarious types propaganda used today. Some examples of propaganda in the book are the party slogans, “Big Brother is watching you,” and sources of propaganda.

After the Two Minutes Hate, Winston watches as “the face of Big Brother faded away again, and instead the three slogans of the Party stood out in bold capitals: WAR IS PEACE / FREEDOM IS SLAVERY / IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH” (Orwell 17). The Party constantly drills the slogans into the minds of the people of Oceania, convincing them that it is true. They state that there are only two options available and force the citizens to choose between them: doing nothing and never achieving peace or going to war to eventually reach peace. Freedom is said to be slavery, driving them into an unhappy, unsure life. They tell them that being ignorant and unaware is strength. According to yourdictionary.com, this type of propaganda is known as creating a false dilemma, where “two choices are offered as if they are the only two options” (examples.yourdictionary.com). This states that there are no alternatives besides the ones offered, neither being good choices, forcing one to choose between
