We still have a long way to go to achieve racial equality in the United States of America. As a nation, we have made many improvements to our society to make the lives of African-American people better. There are no longer any forms of legally enforced segregation in our daily lives, except for the people who choose to be segregated from the other races. “One reason black families are disproportionately economically disadvantaged is because blacks are still about twice as likely as whites to be unemployed” (Austin).That statistic has stayed true for over 50 years and no matter what race you are, that statistic is a troubling one. We have reformed on the fact that black children can grow up knowing that there is no occupation off-limits to them. “Research shows that employers still have a preference for hiring whites over blacks” (Light). It can be quite saddening to know that if you are a black college graduate, then you are less likely to get a job than a white college graduate. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, a part of the people living in Maycomb decided to treat blacks with more respect, but not the entire town concurred with that idea. That is exactly what I think will happen with our country as a whole. There will be half of the nation saying that they want blacks to have true equality, and the other saying they should be contempt with what they have
