An analysis from Pew Research Center shows the following: • Blacks still trail whites in college completion • The black-white income gap remains the largest across the races. • Blacks are twice as likely as whites to be poor. • Blacks are twice as likely as whites to be unemployed • The black unemployment rate today is double that of whites. Blacks and whites in America are living as two societies, one black and one white. Income and socio-economic status has a direct effect on the continued cycle of inequality among wage and earnings. While blacks continually earn less than whites the wage gap increases and creates a way of life among the two races that remains unbalanced. The American government needs to create a system of checks and balances that directly impact not only employer hiring practices but also equal wage and earnings among blacks and whites in America. We need stronger affirmative action policies and legislation governing equality in society for all races. In addition, our government needs to do more to keep up with and adjust to the changes in economics and technology that affect jobs specifically in the black community. Wage inequality among black and white workers has caused increased concerns over the years particularly for blacks. It diminishes economic growth and creates animosity between the races. I decreases individual productivity and promotes status competition. Wage inequality contributes to the lack of healthcare among blacks as well as limits their opportunity for wealth, power, and life opportunities. Inequality in wages and earnings can increase instability in other areas of life such as debt and homeownership. This can lead to higher divorce rates and even higher crime rates for black Americans. According to Pew Research, President Obama called widening income inequality the “defining challenge of our times” as it is a definite challenge for our government and policy
