When a person undergoes a break-up, they usually go through the nine stages of grief according to Psychology Today. One of the stages of grief is depression; in “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare shows this stage of a breakup. Shakespeare uses allusions and oxymoron to show Romeo’s miserable personality after a break up. By using allusion, Shakespeare characterizes Romeo as depressed.

Many scholars consider Shakespeare the master of figurative language. In Romeo and Juliet, he uses different forms of figurative language to help create tension and add to the tragedy.
In this Socratic seminar, many fascinating and engaging topics were discussed, however the group struggled in coming up with conclusions. However one of the most distinguished ideas that were discussed in this seminar was how intentions predict outcomes. The group seemed to all agree that intentions do not predict outcomes, however there can be exceptions. The group continued on expressing their feeling on the topic by pointing out evidence from the books. One example that heated up the debate was how Gorge had intentions of being unique and working up a steak to start his own farm with Lennie however, it did not come to be.
Friar Laurence’s Soliloquy In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses elements of language in Friar Laurence’s speech to convey the idea that everything is both good and evil. In the first half of the soliloquy, Friar addresses the fact that it’s the morning,and the language he chooses, has a negative connotation creating a baleful atmosphere. Juliet is one of the members of the Capulet family which naturally makes her wealthy, even though she is only a young, teenage girl. These elements cause Juliet to make multiple rash decisions including marrying Romeo, sneaking behind her families’ back, and also faking her own death.

Cisneros’s language in “The Monkey Garden” is similar to the language used in Genesis as they both include tempted characters and banishment. When reading these similar lines, Cisneros’s message in “The Monkey Garden” suggests that significant turning points in life are inevitable. “The Monkey Garden” and Genesis contain tempted characters who make the improper decisions: Sally and Eve want to commit actions that identify as irresponsible and unavoidable. In “The Monkey Garden” Tito and his friends persuade Sally when they tell her, “ you can’t get the keys back unless you kiss us and Sally pretend[s]to be mad at first but she [says] yes.
In Act V of Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare, uses foreshadowing to show that people’s fears or uneasiness about a situation can often be for good reason. When Paris is proposing the idea of marrying Juliet to Capulet, Capulet agrees they should be married, but is unsure if it should be now because she is so young. Paris says many women her age are mothers, but Capulet believes, “And too soon marred are those so early made” (Shakespeare, I.2.13) saying that women who marry early are “marred” or spoiled. This foreshadows the fact that Juliet will indeed marry early, and will die and her life will be “marred” because of it. Capulet is afraid she is too young and is not ready to start life as an adult.

In Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare, the characters of Romeo and Juliet teach the readers three important lessons in their tragic love story. These characters show the importance to communicate effectively, thinking before an action, and understanding that all actions have consequences.
In this passage, Shakespeare utilizes metaphor and negative diction to characterize Romeo as a person who is conflicted and frustrated by love, which ultimately reveals the theme that love is uncontrollable, conflicting, and short-lived. Towards the end of act 1 scene 1, Romeo still has a big crush on Rosaline, but Rosaline has no feelings for him. Hence, Romeo experienced a sense of depression and is conflicted by love. In this passage, Shakespeare uses numerous metaphors. “Love is a smoke raised with the fume of sighs.”
