The children’s interactions with people different than themselves teach them valuable life lessons. The first interaction Scout had with Aunt Alexandra was quite frustrating for her. Scout was wearing overalls and Aunt Alexandra was being very critical about that. Along with a few other things like how scout was behaving and how she should have been behaving. The next insightful interaction is with Atticus. The interaction was when Atticus had to tell the kids he was defending Tom Robinson in a court case. This all happened after Cecil Jacobs taunted Scout about it without her even knowing what he was talking about. Scout was angry with all the comments he made like calling Atticus a nigger-lover, so she asked Atticus about the case during the evening. “ ‘Atticus, are we going to win?’ ‘No, honey’ ‘Then why-.’ ‘Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win,’ Atticus said.” (101). This interaction taught the children to think for themselves instead of following the crowd. In this case, the crowd would be the people against the idea and the reality of Atticus defending Tom Robinson. Thinking for himself and Tom, Atticus did what he felt was right and didn’t listen to the crowd telling him to stop and how he is a nigger-lover and a disgrace.
