In some places like Calafornia, Texas and Ohlahoma in 509 public schools, people are thinking of banning the book To Kill a Mockingbird. This book is about a young girl named Scout and the lessons and how she grows along the way. There is also a trial in the book about a black man (Tom Robinson) possibly raping a white woman (Mayella Ewall). The book shows a lot about racism towards colored people. The book could be banned because of the racist language used and rape content. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee should not be banned because it teaches life lessons and it teaches people about racism.
To Kill a Mockingbird should not be banned because the book teaches valuable life lessons. A life lesson that the book teaches people is to try something even if it seems impossible to do. This life lesson is shown when Atticus takes the case to Tom Robinson's defense attorney “Atticus, are we going to win it?” “No honey.” “Then why-” “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started..”(Lee 101) This shows that even though Atticus knows that he probably is not going to win there is always a chance and he can always help someone. So he is going to try even though it might seem impossible. This shows a great life lesson that people should use in life to try something even if it seems almost impossible to do. An example of racism in the book is after the trial after they lost and Jem saying to Atticus how unfair it is because Tom Robinson was innocent. Atticus says to Jem “In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins.” (Lee 295) This is showing that even though a black man in court could be innocent the white man will always win because they are white. This shows that To Kill a Mockingbird should not be banned because it taught us in that quote about racism and how it isn't
