This book is about a young girl named Scout and the lessons and how she grows along the way. There is also a trial in the book about a black man (Tom Robinson) possibly raping a white woman (Mayella Ewall). The book shows a lot about racism towards colored people. The book could be banned because of the racist language used and rape content.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel written and published by Harper Lee in 1960. The novel takes place during the three years of the great depression in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama. The novel deals with serious issues of rape and racial inequality. To Kill a Mockingbird should not be banned in schools because students such as myself need to exposed to the themes that are in the novel because the novel’s themes have relevance in today’s society.
Can you believe a book where a woman is raped, racial slurs are used a multitude of times and a man is gunned down trying to gain his freedom? To kill a mocking bird should not be taught in schools because of its heavy topics, and its use of multiple racial slurs as well as glorifying this culture even if it is unintentionally. It has topics of rape and murder which children should not be hearing and normalizing it by putting it in a mostly lighthearted book. Schools being able to have the right to ban books based on the fact that these books make children of color uncomfortable because of the use of racial slurs is a sound and safe opinion. To Kill A Mockingbird should absolutely remain on the banned book list because it shows racism throughout the entire book and teaches the reader that being prejudice is alright. As you read the novel To Kill A Mockingbird you notice that it is very racist. Throughout the novel you notice that it repeatedly uses the “n” word.
My experience with students as a Greek language teacher, along with the feeling of accomplishment that comes with it, are the reasons why I decided to apply and pursue a master’s degree in education and become a teacher. After six years of teaching, I realized that interacting and teaching young individuals was something that I enjoy and fulfills me as a person. When I am in a classroom teaching my first priority is to create a positive classroom environment where my students can feel safe, welcomed and comfortable.
