Since the creation of media within colonial America, the images that have portrayed the black race have been created mostly from the white supremacist, patriarchal, heteronormative, capitalistic perspective on black people and black life. Under this problematic gaze, black people and black life have been portrayed through black face and minstrelsy with many negative stereotypes being constantly created and reinforced in the media. These stereotypes include coons, mammies, tragic mulattoes, jezebels, uncle Toms and Bucks. It also includes showing black people as subservient, animalistic, uncivilized, unintelligent and illiterate (Adams-Base, Stevenson and Kotzin, 2014).

In the novel entitled, The Help, race is a socially constructed concept. Jackson, Mississippi is an extremely segregated society where the majority of the white population creates rules that try to differentiate blacks from whites. However, there are a group of white individuals that stand for equality, which in turn could lead to danger amongst each other. Although Mississippi is the setting, seemingly different women joined together to change the way coloured maids were viewed. They set aside the false stereotypes of black individuals as well as white and spoke against it.
Why does the United States have a two-party system? American politics is set up around five main principles. The first is that individual behavior is driven by that individual’s goal. There is a group that is frequently misrepresented and discriminated within American society. That group is the black community. African Americans, though having more rights than ever before, are still greatly stereotyped through media, in a negative and an undesirable manner. When I say the words African American most people think of crime, violence, drugs and watermelon, to name a few. “Straight Outta Compton” by the N.W.A. enforces the negative stereotype of African Americans through promoting narcotics, guns, and murder.
The label of white trash even existing is seen to be appalling because of the former notion of white citizens being the alphas and that angered other White Americans(Eastman & Schrock pg 207). Stereotypes were and are a problem but Southern Rock & Roll musicians embraced theirs and appropriated with it because of capitalism. While no one deserves to be put into a category based on prejudice, White Americans made their stereotypes a positive while minorities struggled and still continue to struggle everyday due to stigmas placed on them. Different classes of White Americans were discriminatory against one another. If you were to portray this white trash image, you’d go against the grain so to speak and denounce their privilege.
Being a fast food worker for the past year and a half, I have been exposed to numerous different types of people, and most of them are not the same race as me. When I first started to get to know them, even though at times there was difficulty communicating, we were able to make it work and build stronger relationships. One of my favorite managers was Rose, a Hispanic woman who had been so kind to me. She was an example of someone who was able to teach me things about herself I could have stereotyped and not taken the time to learn anything about her as an individual. Growing up in Joliet, Illinois has always given me the opportunity to experience race relations on a regular basis, just due to the diversity of the city that I live in.
Stereotypical images have for long existed. Stereotypes are images or ideas about certain groups of people or things that in most cases are not true. Hispanic Americans are one of the many groups that are targeted the most with stereotypes. Hispanics are said to be drug dealers. Many Americans claim that Hispanics come to this country to sale drugs and as a result of this the country becomes in danger.
Other common stereotypes that have been used negatively to describe Native Americans are the following ones: All Indigenous people are alcoholics; Native Americans are lazy or all Native Americans live in reservations; just a few to mention. Native Americans have also been seen as “nomads”. The reason of this perception is, some of the Euro-Americans believed that Indians wandered aimlessly as hunters and gatherers. The consequence of this perception, was that Europeans occupied the space with the excuse of Indians did not used the lands for any productive purpose. But what people does not know is the following “All Indians, even the Labrador hunters, the tribes of the Buffalo-covered plains, and the Eskimos, lived in villages.
The change in weather and how the cold or heat makes a difference to one who is not used to it. When Yolanda was introduced to snow for the first time it had shocked her and she got frightened when she had not learned what exactly snow was but just the word snow. “One morning as I sat at my desk daydreaming out the window, I saw dots in the air like the ones Sister Zoe had drawn—random at first, then lots and lots. I shrieked, “Bomb! Bomb!”. The Culture difference for immigrants is also a shock.
The constant bombardment of negative associations of minorities affects how the public views those within these groups. Unconsciously people are affected by these images even those within the Black community. A study in 2006 showed that Blacks that watched a lot of television tended to have more distrust for their neighbors, be less likely to join groups and have a negative attitude toward their neighbors than their, White counter parts viewing the same things. (Beaudoin & Thorson, 2006). These types of problems are only furthering the divide between racial groups.
It’s amazing to see how stereo types have changed over time. Today there are many stereotypes that say that African Americans cannot swim. Dawson stated that hundreds of years ago, the stereotype was African Americans could only swim well because they were closest to animal decent (13). Now a days, there is little talk about the past, and how judgements have changed. Personally, I didn’t know about the past that African Americans were one of the best swimmers.
