In the book, “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton there are two main social groups, the Socs and the greasers. The Socs, and the greasers are enemies in the town of Tulsa and often get into fights just because they are different. Socs and greasers often stereotype each other just based on one experience with one their friends. To start off, there are many instances of greasers stereotyping Socs, but here are just a few examples. First, when Ponyboy was looking through Sodapop’s yearbook he stumbled upon a picture of Bob and thought to himself, “What was he like?
The greasers personify lawbreakers. This is even noted by one of the characters for their similarity to “hoods”. This character states that they steal, fight, and hold up gas stations. Yet, they are not always despicable people. They occasionally achieve magnificent things.

However, people soon realize that when you start to eat bananas that have more spots and are imperfect they turn out to be sweeter and better. This connects to stereotypes because people who follow stereotyped will always eat the perfect bananas; however, people who choose to look through another perspective can realize that the imperfect bananas are better. This connects to The Outsiders because Ponyboy realizes this after he talks with two Socs, kids from a rival group named Randy and Cherry. In The Outsiders, S.E Hinton presents the idea that teenagers can break through stereotypes if they look at life through another perspective; as shown in the book when Ponyboy starts to talk to Cherry and Randy and realizes the stereotypes about them are false.
Society is built upon a grand scale of assumptions and misunderstandings, all of which tend to lead us in a path for the worst. There is, however, a remedy for our seemingly infinite list of problems that lead us to war, hate, and unrest. Unfortunately, this remedy is not very likely to be found because we have not been looking in the right places, which happen to be right beneath our noses. You see, we as a society have spent our lives writing books, directing movies, and painting murals, and yet we have overlooked our own genius; Footloose, The Breakfast Club, and Dirty Dancing. These three movies all share a common thread, and it’s not their epic soundtracks and classic ending scenes.
The novel The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton illustrates a theme of stereotyping and its effect on the characters. The protagonist, Ponyboy Curtis is the most affected by stereotyping. Ponyboy is stereotyped as a greaser. He accepts this stereotype, but is negatively affected by it, because society views greasers as poor, bellicose, delinquents from the East Side.
The Stereotypical “Nerd” All throughout history the media has been putting labels on people; these labels are called Stereotypes. At one time or another, mostly everyone has been a promoter or a victim of stereotyping. Teens tend to label people such as “the blonde”. Blonde headed people are seen as dumb and fake because of stereotypes, but just because someone is blonde do not mean they are dumb. In the movie Mean Girls, the media portrays these teenagers as typical stereotypes.
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is a book full of unexpected character revelations. Readers realize that Dally is not the cold, unemotional person he seems to be. This is shown many times in the book, when Dallas puts his friends before himself. Characterization is when an author creates memorable characters whose words, actions, and feelings reveal human truths. S.E. Hinton uses the craft move of characterization in order to teach readers that Dallas Winston hides his love and feelings in order to protect himself from getting hurt.
But the thing is, the greasers may have done lots of bad things, but the good things they do affects more than the little bad things they do. “It’s worth saving those kids. Their lives are worth more than mine, they have more to live for.” (pg 178) This shows that the greasers care more about the lives of others better than themselves.
The Socs live on the west side and are known as the west side rich kids who have all the breaks. People judge their personality just based on where they live, and what they look like. Stereotyping is an unfair way to judge people because you never know their whole story. It is wrong to judge someone just by who they hang out with. In The Outsiders, Cherry, a Soc, and Ponyboy, a greaser, start talking at a Drive-in movie.

We all know that we make stereotypes, but we often ignore it. Some of the common stereotypes are; white people can’t jump, all Arabs are terrorists, and all black people listen to hip hop. A stereotype is when someone sees an individual do something and they think that everyone that looks like them does the same thing.
Did you hear about the inspiring teenager, Mary Henry, who raised enough money to send 66 girls to school in an underdeveloped country? No? I thought that might be the case. Did you hear about the teenager, Corey Worthington, who hosted an alcohol fueled party that attracted 100s of teens? Of course you did!
Imagine fearing walking down the street by yourself. When wealthy Socs can attack you at any unexpected moments. Greasers live a rough and tough life on the East side, some without parents or ones that show them love and care. They’ve all gone through something difficult in their life, and that’s what makes them bond so well. The Greasers show love and self-sacrifice to the whole gang; looking out for them no matter what happens because that’s what they need -a loving family.
Stereotypes and social scripts are a timeless subject that have been caught and displayed to entertain through movies. Whether it be a classic, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, with Asian Mr. Yunioshi played by the obliviously Caucasian Mickey Rooney. (source) Exhibiting the obvious incorrect race for the role, and yet the film still went on the be very successful. This is due to dyers thinking, “stereotypes express particular definitions of reality, with concomitant evaluations, which in turn relate to the disposition of power within society.”
Italian Americans have been portrayed wrongly because of the movie The Godfather. This movie has caused multiple false stereotypes, because the movie is extremely popular and is from 1972, all mafia movies that are made after use the same stereotypes that are in The Godfather. For instance Italian Americans are portrayed as violent or greedy. There all also multiple stereotypes that are found in The Godfather that are wrongly presented. Violence is a huge part of The Godfather, Most of the scenes in this movie are violent.
From being around my friends and peers around school, or even outside of school I have seen and been stereotyped. The stereotypes I have been placed with are, the crazy do anything kid, annoying, immature, good athlete, trustworthy, and you can mess/pick on me and I won’t do anything about it. I think most people would believe that I am not popular, but well known in a good way. Also that I am a fun guy to hang out with and do crazy stuff, until I get too annoying.
