Morrison’s Recitatif is a thought-provoking story about an inter-racial childhood as two girls partially grow up in an institution without their mothers. Roberta’s mother was sick and Twyla’s mother wanted to dance all night, or so the girls believed. The two girls were able to bond through their life experiences and different predicaments and become friends. As they run into each other various times in adulthood, the story creates an interesting narrative of the views of society as a whole and individual racism. The way this story is set up causes the reader to not have a clear understanding as to how to interpret and perceive the overall narrative.
Introduction Historically, few women managed to reach the list of serial killers. Jane Toppan was born Honora Kelley and an ever known American female serial killer. Her murder confession went to 33 cases. Despite this horrible adventure, she was quoted saying that her aim was to kill more helpless people than any man or woman ever lived in the world.
Overcoming Stereotypes Twyla once said at the coffee shop, “ A black girl and a white girl meeting in a Howard Johnson’s on the road and having nothing to say. Now we are behaving like sisters separated for much too long.” Twyla wants things to be the same as they were at St. Bonny’s between her and Roberta, but realized that maybe too much time has passed and society has gotten in the way of them staying friends. As the story progresses, the two girls interact in a racially divided America that wants them to be enemies, but the girls hearts prevail and they overcome the stereotypes and stay friends. What is Prejudice? It’s someone who has a hostile attitude towards a group or individual because they are part of a specific religion, race, or nationality. Prejudice is shown in some of the characters in William Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice and Angie Thomas's The Hate U Give. Prejudice is shown in these plays and novels because of their Religion and Race.
Prejudice is a preconceived notion that is not based on reason or actual experience. It is a feeling towards a person based on his/her affiliation towards a group. If I think have a certain belief towards a specific group of people based on their race, sex, or religion and I come across people belonging to such group, I may hold that belief towards them based on their affiliation to the group. These preconceived notions are then turned into stereotypes; a belief that that is unreliable and over-generalized about all members of a group that do not take into account individual differences of a group. These stereotypes exist because it help how we interpret and view other people in the world.

Bias, bias is defined as a tendency to believe that some people, ideas, etc., are better than others that usually results in treating some people unfairly.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines prejudice as “a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.” The word “prejudice”, is similar to its Latin root, “praejudicium”, which means “judgment in advance.” Prejudice is a prevalent issue that has led to many other issues throughout history like racism, sexism, classism, etc. Even though prejudice causes a divide in society, people can not help but judge others based on their looks, personal beliefs, etc.
Prejudice is an opinion with no real reason or experience that supports it. Prejudice can come in many different forms and many are shown in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. To Kill a Mockingbird is set in the 1930’s when racism and sexism was everywhere and the idea of prejudice fueled many of these broader topics. Oftentimes racist and sexist ideas are passed down by other people's opinions, so what one person is told may allow them to create their own similar opinion, this is also how prejudice is spread. People are not born prejudiced but rather learn prejudiced ideas as they grow, however there are ways to avoid prejudice and to remain indifferent towards prejudiced opinions.
A stereotype is a fixed set of beliefs upon of a certain group of individuals who share common traits. Stereotypes can be classified into a wide range of categories such as: race, culture, ethnicity, gender, social or economic status, and religion. A stereotype has to do with a group of people rather than an individual. Most stereotypes are biased and untrue. Stereotypes often lead to prejudice, meaning that one acts a certain way due to the fixed beliefs they have toward a certain group of individuals.
The act of stereotyping is assuming that all members of a group have similar knowledge, behaviors, or beliefs simply because they belong to a group. Using stereotypes is one of the most common reasons why countless people are misjudged. It can occur with the person’s knowledge or it can happen subconsciously. Sometimes, in writing, authors will form stereotypes for their characters to fit into. By using a stereotype, it sets a base for the character to build off of and show change.

According to the dictionary, stereotype is defined as “a simplified and standardised conception or image invested with special meaning and help in common by members of a group.” Moreover, it is considered as a form of prejudice, as people are putting labels about how a person should act or live according to their gender, nationality, religion, personality or appearance. This creates pre judgment, including misconceptions, which can develop further, leading to bigger problems and complications. Society can be broken down into many groups or categories and there are all sorts of categories within stereotyping, which are the tools used to stereotype.
People get categorized by stereotypes everyday just by outward appearances or the group of people they are associated with. A stereotype is a preconceived notion about a group of people. People form fixed images of a group that are assumed that all group members act and behave is a particular way. A person essentially gets stereotyped by being “guilty by association” of a particular group. All stereotypes get based off of a bit of truths that all group members similarly have.
