During the 1800's slavery and segregation was the biggest it had ever been. To begin with, Segregation means legal or socially enforced separation of public or private facilities based upon race. Secondly, their were slave codes, these were codes that laws each U.S. colony passed which defined the status of slaves and the rights of master. Also, these slave codes began to be used for everything which made marriage, owning property, firearms and learning to read and write illegal. In conclusion, slavery and segregation were cruel,
But slavery made life hard for many. According to Hart, “Free blacks were often forced to wear special badges, pay extra taxes, and live separately from whites” (328). Blacks were treated differently in the South, which caused a lot of separation between the Southerners. Another difference between the North and South was the way people lived. According to Hart,, “...more and more Northerners were moving to towns and cities.
Slavery was the foundation of segregation. Blacks were being separated from the whites during the times of slavery, mostly because of Bacon’s rebellion. Bacon’s rebellion united both races, poor whites and poor blacks to fight back against the Native Americans, and eventually try to dethrone the corrupted government (Berlin). After Bacon died, the rebellion had ended, and the government feared that another rebellion could begin by unifying the poor whites and blacks. Thus, the government gave more rights to the whites, and put the poor blacks into an even lower class (Berlin).
Their rights were often compared to the rights of white people. Mississippi Black Codes states in section 2 that “all freedmen, free Negroes, and mulattoes may intermarry with each other, in the same manner and under the same regulations that are provided by law for white persons” (Mississippi Black Codes). They separated society based off of a person’s skin color and ethnicity. People of different races were treated differently which made society a them versus us environment. Laws from Virginia required a slave to gain permission before they were able to leave the plantation.
For example, food was separated by hierarchy;slave masters would receive the finest of ingredients compared to slaves’ meals that were made with more common fare. However, food also aided in unifying slaves by serving as a common denominator when most plantations were created to separate West Africans of the same ethnic
Additionally, in The New Jim Crow, we are able further understand this when Michelle Alexander goes in depth on the topic and explains how racism and prejudice has formed in the US and created a divide between the slaves and the poor white people. Then she tells us how this divide established due to the elite plantation owners’ search for the ideal slaves and how it ended up oppressing the black people. Furthermore, she explains how during the Reconstruction Era, white elites were still using methods, such as the vagrancy laws, the Black Codes and the Jim Crow, in attempts to control the black population. Moreover, she goes on to explain that as time goes on, this new system of slavery has continued to oppress minorities and poor whites, dividing the country. As a repercussion of this divide, people such as Donald Trump have been successful in their endeavors, consequently not learning from history, inevitably doomed to repeat it.
Although slavery was abolished, this did not stop the discrimination and segregation they later faced. Jim Crow Laws were made shortly after slavery’s abolishment. These laws separated the people into two categories: whites and colors. There were bathrooms, schools, and restaurants for people of color to segregate them (“Civil Rights Movement”). This was devastating to the community.
The division is a direct result of social stigma and differentiating economical welfare. Poor whites and haughty wealthy aristocratic planters had to be eventually separated from the instragiance of both sides on a political, social, and economic degree. Therefore, the social aspects of the North Carolina colony caused extreme political bias and favouritism amounting to a physical split. Social differences, when referencing poor landowning whites and economically dominant aristocrats, directly invoked political shortcomings and economical division did was in no way inferior to the cause also.
In the South blacks where didn't really slaves yet they were impeded by state laws, for example, the dark codes. Both regions of the Nation had their different fights with race yet,
The third book I chose to evaluate African American culture and identity is names Papa’s Mark (Battle-Lavert, 2003). This book was about a young African American boy, Simms, who had a strong passion and desire to help his father learn how to write. During this time period, African Americans were given the freedom to vote. However, Simms noticed that his father did not know how to write his own name and wanted to make sure he could by the time election day arrived. In order to achieve his goal, Simms would leave a piece of paper with his father’s name written at the top to help guide him.

“Jim Crow rules limited almost every aspect of African Americans’ lives: where they could live, study, work, play, and worship; how they could travel; and even where they could be jailed or buried” (Rasmussen 3). Segregation is the forced separation of humans from one another; the Jim Crow laws made segregation legal in the states that they were enacted in. In March of 1881, Tennessee passed the first Jim Crow law, it segregated railroad
There are many open wounds in the African-American community that have not healed what so ever. Disintegration of family structures in the African-American community has been a persistent problem for far too long. High out of wedlock birth rates, absent fathers, and the lack of a family support network for many young African-Americans have led to serious problems in America's urban areas. The persistence of serious social problems in inner-city areas has led to a tragic perpetuation of racial prejudice as well. African Americans still face a litany of problems in the 21st century today.
The Impact of Culture and Gender Roles Heather Richardson-Barker Drexel University Society has clearly defined boundaries between what is considered to be male or female. The development of an individual’s gender role is formed by interactions with those in close proximity. Society constantly tells us how we should look, act and live based on gender, as well as the influence of family, friends and the media have a tremendous impact on how these roles are formed and the expected behavior of each gender role. The term Gender, as defined by the United Nations, includes the psychological, social, cultural, and behavioral characteristics associated with being female or male. It further defines acceptable
Many of the slaves found in America were shipped from Africa and while they were subjected to a new culture and religion, they continued to use the culture they inherited from their original homes where by men were the head of the family. The abolition of slavery did not change the situation still, since while the liberated slaves were said to be free only men were allowed access such privileges like voting and owning
