Throughout William Shakespeare's play The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark the characteristics of insanity and suicidal tendencies are two characteristics that are very clear as the play goes on. Hamlet suffers the loss of his father and shortly after his father's death, his uncle takes his father's role, and bride. This is one of the many causes of Hamlet's actions throughout the play. In this quote, Hamlet is walking alone while Polonius and Claudius watched secretly. Hamlet discusses whether it is better to live or die. He asks if it is better to put up with all the terrible things of life or to die. Hamlet states dying ends all heartache that life throws at us. Hamlet feels this because with his father's death, he still feels extreme heartache. Hamlet is still mourning the loss of his father and it hurts him that no one else mourned his father’s death. They just continued on in life as if nothing ever happened.
Hamlet as a man was true to himself, and others. He showed massive respect for his late father. Hamlet was a very smart man and he devised many plans that affected many people. People took him for granted because they thought he was insane. Hamlet was able to tell who was a true friend of his and who was there trying to find something wrong with him. His only true friend was Horatio. His downfall was not a flaw, but the choice to listen to the ghost and fulfill the ghost’s request to kill the new King Claudius. This is where you begin to see Hamlet act irrational and make decisions that later led to his death. Hamlet died in the end and that is what he deserved.
