The "Gasht-e Ershad," often known as the morality police in Iran, is a government-run group responsible with enforcing rigid dress and conduct standards in public areas. These laws are founded on Islamic morality, and the morality police have the power to hold and arrest those they believe to be breaking the laws. The morality police were disbanded, according to Iranian officials, following criticism for their harsh methods and discriminatory targeting of women and other underprivileged groups. The group has been accused of using intimidation and violence to coerce certian cooperation, as seen in the death of Masha Amini. She passed away shortly after being detained by the morality police and was widely reported to have been assaulted with …show more content…

Individuals suspected of committing thoughtcrimes were detained, subjected to torture, and often murdered by the Thought Police. The Thought Police monitored residents' thoughts and actions through surveillance and psychological manipulation. “There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment.” (5) The central protagonist of 1984, Winston Smith, was too afraid to look at the telescreen that would be watching him. Thus he would intentionally turn his back on it and face the other way, still terrified that his back would give off any indication for the Thought Police to arrest him. A constsitant source of worry and fear that emanated from Winston was that his ideas and actions may be viewed as rebellious, resulting in his arrest. Due to his fear, he believed that anyone could be a spy for the Party; he found it difficult to build relationships and trust in people. Overall, Winston's dread similar to many others, of being arrested acts as a potent tool for the Party to isolate, corrupt, and control its people. The threat of totalitarianism, as well as the repression of individuality and freedom of thought, are all represented by the concept of the Thought Police. Winston warned Julia, the girl who he had a love affair with. “ We are the dead.” (137). Yet, their love is strictly prohibited under Party laws. Winston accepts himself as a dead man like those who have declared war against the Party. He sees himself as Emmanual Goldstein, the first to betray the Party. With Winston’s regular attendance to the Two Minutes of Hate, an effective psychological operation to incite hatred for specific individuals and ideologies.
