A building explodes in the distance, who is guilty? The perpetrator who rigged the explosion or the country that caused them to go that far. V for Vendetta extensively explores this topic in a number of ways. V is pegged by the Norsefire as public enemy number one, the worst of the worst, a terrorist through and through, but this novel is told from a perspective that paints him as a hero, the great savior of the land. While he is all of those things, the ways he can be perceived is all about the perspective that someone takes when reading. One can either say that neither are terrorists or that they both are. V states, “Behind this mask there is more than just flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea... and ideas are bulletproof.” (Moore) Most vigilantes wear masks, because they don’t want to be known for what they are doing. Both so they do not get in trouble for the crimes they are committing and so they can help the people that need it but do not have the power to help themselves. Comic books are one of the finest examples of the show of vigilantism in the media, having classic characters such as Batman, Green Arrow, and Black Canary. In all of these cases, including the one in this book, the vigilante justice being served was a form of domestic terrorism. Domestic terrorism is when someone are going against their own country because they do not agree with some system or law they have in place. That is exactly what V is doing. He is using the Guy Fawkes mask to send a message, that he and the people of the country do not agree or condone how the Norsefire are running said country, by blowing up buildings such as the Old Bailey and the Houses of Parliament. In many instances, the book mentions having an inch. One instance in the Valerie chapter mentions “the very last inch of us” and then she states “but within that inch we are free.” Another says, “I shall die here. Every last inch of me shall perish. Except one. An inch. It's small and it's fragile and it's the only thing in the world worth having. We must never lose it, or sell it, or give it away. We must never let them take it from us.” (Moore) She then goes on the list things she hopes for Evey to escape, making me realize that inch is hope. Hope in a time of disaster is one of the most fragile things and one of the most important. V gives the people hope, making him by the very definition a hero, even if he committed acts of domestic terrorism. V was for them, the beaten and the damned such as Valerie, an out gay woman, fighting for their freedom and in their memory.
