Cheerleading is a Sport

An athlete must be someone who is fit, healthy, co-ordinated, able to learn fast and able to work in a team. These qualities are applied by many men and women as they take to the pitch. However this is not a footballer. This is a cheerleader. Cheerleading is a physical activity, sometimes a competitive sport, based on organised routines, usually ranging from two to three minutes. These routines contain the components of tumbling, dance, jumps, cheers, and stunting to direct spectators of events to participate in competitions. A cheerleader is a member of a group that performs coordinated routines typically combining gymnastic and dance manoeuvres often in competition with similar groups.

What is a sport? A sport is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment”. For a hobby or activity to be a sport it must be a physical activity which involves throwing a mass through space/overcoming the resistance of mass. In cheerleading there is a skill called “stunting”, this is where an average height female (or male) is thrown or held, by two to four girls, 8ft into the air to perform a skill. The judge in the case then ruled they could not do this as cheerleading is not a real sport as it is too undeveloped and disorganised. Undeveloped? As far as I am aware over 95 different countries compete in all star cheerleading. Disorganised? In April 2015 I visited the state, Florida to compete in the World Cheerleading Championships, I would most definitely say it was one of the most well coordinated events I have ever been to.
