In today’s society, sports get taken quite seriously. Everywhere there’s news, facts, fans, and sports supporters eagerly all to discuss a favorite topic. Marching band on the other hand gains the bare minimum of support. Many people enjoy music, except more often than not it gets viewed as not physical or effortless. For years the band students obtain the stereotype as weak, unskilled, and unathletic. What truly must earn consideration is what it takes to participate in a marching band. In general, in order for an activity to pass as a sport, it requires the usual factors which include a ball, racquets, and sticks, playing against an opposing team, and playing for a score. Every one of those also requires strength, stamina, uniforms, and a coach. Under a different light, band complies with those rules as well. In order to participate with the whole band, individual lessons are required to ensure all music meets the director’s standards. Individual practice outside of lessons must also be accomplished, as well as attendance to whole band rehearsals. On average practice time wavers between an hour to all day. In one article the author writes, “High school marching bands in the suburbs spend a significant chunk of summer getting ready for halftime shows and grueling band competitions.” Marching practices occur more than sports practices. According to Ohio State University, “Band members typically spend 10 hours a week at rehearsal, plus time outside of rehearsal to practice and memorize music. If performing at a football game, band members are expected to arrive six hours before kickoff.” (Marching Band) Now not all bands have to follow exactly what Ohio did, but it shows roughly the total of time a true dedicated marching band spends practicing.
