The UK Riots In 2011 thousands of young people rioted in London and other cities across England. Shops were looted, cars and buildings were set on fire and people and police officers were exposed to violence. Today it is still a mystery to many why the rioting took place and what the rioters motives were. In the two texts “Experts Cite Underlying Causes for UK Riots” and “Caring costs – but so do riots” we hear different opinions on what caused the UK riots. In the first text we are presented to some different views from people. Many are convinced that the rioting was not based on any political or economic reasons. He believes that they are bored and have nothing to do. Erica Lopez is member of a group called HYPE, which is trying to do something good for the society. She understands the anger that the rioters must feel caused the unemployment and lack of jobs. She thinks that the government needs to listen to what these people have to say. The young people have not been heard, so this rioting is a way to draw attention to the problems there is in society. However, she also believes that many people are just rioting without any purpose. The second text which is written by Camila Batmanghelidjh is subjective. We hear her own views and opinions on what caused the UK riots. She thinks that the reason to their actions is that they do not feel as a part of the communities they live in. She also mentions some groups of people who have formed their own communities with their own rules. Camila thinks that it might be these groups that cause the rioting because the violent behaviour is justified in these groups. It is very subjective. It can be seen on how the rioters are described (page 1 line 14 “rioting morons must be put behind bars”). It can generally be seen on the adjectives which are used for descriptions (page 1 line 4 “brave policemen”). It is mentioned in the beginning of the text, that the parliament is having a meeting to discuss the riots. And then some suggestions are made to what the parliament should discuss as to the rioting. It is clear to see that the editors on the newspaper are very much against the rioters and have no sympathy with them at all. They think that “the law on rioting must be toughened” (page 1 line 4).
