The aims of learning provision for numeracy development is to prepare children for more in depth mathematical learning which in turn will be beneficial to all children throughout their daily lives. The use of numbers and mathematics is integral to everyone's day to day living, therefore it important that children learn to recognise and use numbers, also learning how to apply mathematics in their daily lives. The aim of the curriculum for numeracy development is that children will develop their ability to use their numeracy skills in real life situations.
In the Reception class, while working within the guidelines of the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage), children learn a lot through their play and guided play. Through the resources made available to them and with the adults referral to numbers and counting, plus basic connections to addition and subtraction, children gradually grasp the mathematical concepts and build on their working knowledge. Numeracy worksheets are often used to assess the children's understanding.

To encourage learners to follow their own lines of enquiry or complete tasks unaided I can support them in a number of ways. It is vital that I use the correct mathematical language when speaking,encouraging them to do the same. I could help children recall the right process to come to the correct answer to a problem and I can also ask the children questions which may encourage them to think in a different way to reach the correct answer. If a child is having difficulties with a mathematical problem they may need to ask questions to be able to come to their own solution.
