Whether it happens inside an elevator, in a waiting room, at the mall, on Facebook, or any other social media website, everybody has small talk with other people everyday. An example of small talk would be before class starts with your professor. Your professor would say something like "How are you doing?" "I'm loving the weather outside today." The purpose for these small talk is to ease into the major topic or class. Some of the places or occasions to engage small talk opportunities would most likely happen when you are waiting in line to get into a movie or to get into a roller coaster ride, riding in an elevator, or even just waiting for your bus at the bus stop. An example of being positive is commenting on a persons shoes, saying that they are nice and cool and then move onto another topic. Being sensitive to leave taking cues is when a person that would want the small talk to be a preliminary to big talk and another person might see it differently as the sum of the interaction. To stress similarities rather than differences is a great way to make sure that the small talk stays non controversial. When you answer questions with the right amount of elaboration to give the other person information to use to interact with yourself is better than just answering "yeah" because a "yeah"
