What we use to consider as a normal family or nuclear family is no longer the norm. Society has created multiple structures of families to accommodate different lifestyles and needs. A family can be a considered as a type of social institution and the structural changes that happen within families can be explained by sociological theories. There are three major theories that can be applied to the changes in families; Functionalist by Durkheim, Conflict by Marx, and Symbolic Interactionist by Mead.
