James Nuci Mr. Ottman English 11 AP 23 August 2017 Essay 21: Innovative author and presence on the Internet, Steven Johnson, in his excerpt from everything that is good for you; how today's popular culture is actually making us smarter (2005), publicizes that the general population would have dramatically different viewpoints if presented with different chronological circumstances. He supports his claim by first offering statistics that summarize pleasure readers' positive impact on society, then having readers visualize the world with certain circumstances, then breaking down two opposing sides of an argument, and then finally clarifying his own point of view on the topic. Johnson's purpose is to shine light on the controversial standpoint of many people on a certain topic, in order to allow readers to understand both sides of the argument along with their pros and cons. He creates a professional tone for people associated with pleasure reading or playing video games.
World War Video Games In Steven Johnson ’s essay “Games” (2005), he constructs his argument by saying that playing video games is no better or worse than reading, it is simply exercising different skills. What kept my interest in this short essay was the fresh take on the subject on how video games effect young adults. He addresses the audience knowing they will agree with his contrast of the two subjects or take it to be completely true. His explanation of it allows him to reach even the biased of readers to accept the rest of his argument.
Video games may resemble books in a small portion, but not to a great enough extent and books are better are the elements encased in “Games”. Steven Johnson does a wonderful job in his essay and proves his points quite well. His essay provides information towards his argument and makes it strong. In my opinion Thurgood Marshall was influential by the fact that he was a special counsel to the NAACP, which is the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Marshall became a key prosecuting attorney in several school segregation cases argued before the Supreme Court, including the 1954 landmark case Brown vs. the Board of Education. I believe that was the highlight of it all because his decision to participate and overall fight for the purpose of helping for a bigger cause in something that would go down highlighted in history. In “How ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ Changed My Life”, Ethan Gilsdorf compares the differences in nerd culture today and when he was a young adult. The purpose of this article is to analyse how Dungeons and Dragons and, by extention, games in general have changed over the years. He writes to other old D&D players and newer players, showing how the game has and hasn’t changed over the years. The genre is part narrative, part analysis, switching between the two to better explain his point. Gilsdorf has uses his personal experience to help the reader understand the differences in D&D from over twenty years ago and the game now.

When Matthew Walther published his article “Sorry Nerds: Video Games Are Not a Sport” he tries to explain in a variety of different ways how video games aren’t a true sport; yet proceeds to use the reference that watching CNN with your grandpa could be a sport biased on his definition of a sport. With the way the author is trying to describe how he doesn’t think video games are a sport to his audience he leaves out some key things. People play video games to have fun, make money, pass the time, or just to relax, an forget about what has gone wrong in their day. Some people play games all day without sleeping or eating, that’s how serious it is.
Are video-games a sport? In recent years a pressing topic that has surfaced, especially among parents to children involved in such activities. I am of the belief that they are as real of a sport as football and hockey and that professional gamers should for all intents and purposes be considered athletes. Throughout the history, gamers are generally thought of as a dumb, anti-social person, but recently researchers have discovered that video games could make you smarter than the average person. One person could say that video games distract from the academic goals and ultimately disrupt a person’s grades for school. On the other hand, one could believe that playing video games could actually improve social behavior, provide technical skills, increase one’s strategic skills, and improve critical thinking skills in everyday situations.
In addition, the structure of today 's video games requires certain types of learning that are very helpful to students, specifically computer skills. This proves, that kids are gaining new knowledge from these games. They also improve hand-eye coordination, and raises players’ self-esteem. The article (Wiley 2016) Science Daily states, “Gaming use was associated with better function in brain circuits critical for learning based on the acquisition of new skills through practice.”
Over the years there has been a big controversy over whether video games are relatively good or extremely bad for children. Video games are super beneficial to a kid’s learning process and have been proven to increase social skills, productivity, and stress. The fear that video games are harmful to a child, is proven through countless experiments that they are actually great for their growth and brain capacity. Video games can increase the social skills in a child, Xbox and PlayStation provide great opportunities for cooperation and competition. Two different studies, one by Katherine Keyes and the other by Vinay Devnath, both have proved that the use of video games can increase the social skills that many children can’t grasp, “Video game playing is often a collaborative leisure time activity for school-aged children, and these results indicate that children who frequently play video games may be socially cohesive with peers and integrated into the school”( Keyes, PhD).

Teenagers from fifteen to eighteen, who have been called as “K-20 students” [1] or Net Generation since mid-1990s, playing video games as pastime leisure and expose to digital multimedia more often compare to the older generation. The issues of implementing video games education has been the subject of debate within education and sociology communities due to its appeal to contemporary students. Discussion among sociology scholars focus on the aggressive behaviour and hostility of youngsters who are involved in a video game in a great length of time and a specific type of games [2]. However, some academics argue that video game becomes an interactive learning platform of social education, especially with players verses players (PVP) games.
