Why do you want to go to college? Ironically, this question was first asked of me by my parents. This was a long time ago and the world was a different place.
In the first place, there are many reasons why I would love to attend Spelman College Summer Program, to name a few it would be an honor and a privilege for me and for my family to witness. According to Wikipedia, it states, "Spelman College holds lots of history, and distinction of being American’s first, oldest, private, and liberal arts historically black College for women.” In addition, my father is a carpenter and he always told me that the foundation of a building is the most important part to keep the building strong. In the same fashion, if I were to be approved for the Spelman summer program this will add to my foundation even if it’s only for two weeks.
As long as I can remember, I knew that college was going to be part of my future. That is because I always knew what my family expected out of me. College is not only important to me for the reason of making my parents proud, but for making sure that I create more out of myself, as well. With a higher education, I will have more job opportunities available, potentially be able to earn higher income, and obtain more useful life skills than somebody who does not have a college education. I would like to attend Science and Math Academy for three main reasons. The first reason being that SMA has highly qualified teachers. This helps me pursue my career goal of becoming an engineer. Growing up in rural Texas, I was the oldest of five and seen as the head of my family while my parents were working hard to pay the bills. Having that type of responsibility made me feel good as the leader of all my siblings, but in a lot of ways it was one of the main reasons I decided not to further my education after high school, considering I was helping to make sure all my other siblings also made it through school. Although I put off college for a long while, I have been inspired to attend Strayer to obtain and dissect my professor’s knowledge, discover any hidden skills, and elevate in the business world, ultimately changing a huge part of my life. Being the supervisor at FedEx along with my Boss, I feel I make a decent amount of money to support my fiancé and my step children, but when I think of all the opportunities that come along with owning a business, I know for sure that I will increase my income.
Doing what I love and being able to support myself and loved ones is important to me. I am a very independent person and I like to do things my way. I like to set individual goals everyday, whether that means doing my homework before a certain time, or completing something for the week. They help me get my work done on time and efficiently.
Attending college wasn’t an obligation of mine but a choice that I took. My reasons are probably just like everyone else’s at my age.
