The Spanish Civil War overview, in 1931 the King of Spain relinquished the throne allowing Spain to hold its first democratic election. By 1936 Spain was split between the loyalist Republican’s and the Nationalists. The axis empire along with the Catholic Church planned a revolution against Republican Spain under the military direction of General Franco. The Spanish Civil War, is routinely disregarded in history books, was a very important event in the history of the world. It is believed that if England and France had given Spain aid during the war, they could have greatly weakened Hitler and Mussolini
