“Happier were the victims of the sword than the victims of hunger, who wasted away, pierced by lack of the fruits of the field” (Lamentations 4:8, ESV). This Bible verse tells how hard a life without nourishment will cause someone to want a sword for death rather than the painful pangs of starvation. It is a shame to see such a large number of people in despair or dying, not knowing how they are going to survive from one day to the next. Hunger, malnutrition, and famine all stem from a lack of money, knowledge, and resources. Everyone knows that money is the root of all evil, and to have money means prestige and favor in society. The beginning of Hosea 4:6, the prophet is addressing Israel, speaking for God, telling them, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” Although this Scripture speaks about a knowledge of God, it is synonymous with the effects of a lack of knowledge in poor countries around the world. According to an online article on Hesperian.org (2014), pertaining to social and political causes of hunger, migration, epidemic diseases, and simply a general lack of knowledge contributes to malnutrition and hunger. Being forced to move and work in factories causes farmers to lose the knowledge of how to farm for themselves. Epidemic or fatal diseases cause a lack of knowledge, especially if the only member of the family dies before imparting their knowledge of farming or economics to the younger generations. Not to mention, a lack of money means a lack of proper education and this leads to not knowing how to properly take care of children, not feeding them adequate meals, leading to malnourishment, and eventually death. An upside to this lack of knowledge are the agencies, especially within the United States, such as Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), who help those who ask for aid with vouchers to purchase food.
