“By 2015, approximately 2.3 billion adults will be overweight and more than 700 million will be obese” (Barbour 5). In today’s world, obesity is a problem and should be helped by influencing people to make healthier choices. According to the World Health Organization, obesity is defined as having a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or above. They also say that, “BMI is found by taking your weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters (kg/m2)” (Barbour 2). Obesity is caused by a gradual intake of calories that are far greater than the rate of it being expended through one’s day. That being said, many of those calories not being used by the body are then stored as fat, which over time makes a jiggly and unhealthy excess of fat that can cause …show more content…

If the worldwide obesity rate keeps up, many more people will be living this unhealthy and painful lifestyle. Regulations need to be made for all of the unhealthy foods like a limit to calories per week. According to Michael L. Marlow, “The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recently released its 462-page report Accelerating Progress in Obesity Prevention: Solving the Weight of the Nation. Proposed solutions include integrating physical activity into every day life in every way, promoting marketing of what matters for a healthy life, promoting greater availability of healthy foods and beverages, enlisting employers and health care professionals in the fight against obesity, and strengthening schools as the "heart of health" (Marlow 4). Aside from regulation, promoting the healthy is what the IOM believes can help the problem. This is true because promotions can pressure the obese to think more so on the healthy side.
