After many years of finding a country to fund his voyage finally the Spanish government agreed to fund his trip. Months later Columbus landed on what he thought was East Asia but then discovered that he landed in the Bahamas. After this grand discovery Christopher Columbus was named a hero by many but a hero must be a courageous person that demonsted good deeds and inspired others, but Christopher Columbus was not a hero but instead a villain that claimed he started a new civilization.
Growing up in America, every child in school is taught about Christopher Columbus, the man who discovered America. They learn how this great Italian explorer who was in search for a faster, but while looking for this new trade route, he in turn “discovered” a new land. Historians are now revealing a different story altogether, telling students that they have been lead to hold an ethnocentric view about exploration. I began formulating my opinion on Columbus in American History 1; however, reading the newspaper article Columbus: not a man worth honoring recently furthered that opinion. My original opinion of Columbus was that he had courage, sailing the ocean and greeting the Natives with kindness and consideration. From reading the editorial, however, I learned that Columbus had in fact done the opposite. As a result, I was inquisitive and thoughtful.
Loewen argues, “The authors of history textbooks have taken us on a trip of their own, away from the facts of history, into the realm of myth.” As historical events regress further into the past, writers may misinterpret facts that they may have studied. A story of discovery and friendship or a tale of conquest, murder, and greed, which of these are Christopher Columbus’ true stories? I believe the best method to teach American high school students about Christopher Columbus’ story is through historiography because historiography teaches students to compare and distinguish different outlooks from different writers’ point of views instead of just remembering misinterpreted facts. Historiography would guide and force students to study and learn history through a diverse set of historians who focused on the same subject and come to different conclusions.

Many European explorers wanted to become wealthier in their travels. This is shown in Letter of Christopher Columbus to Luis de Sant Angel, where the text states, “I can give them as much gold, spices, cotton, and as many Indian slaves as they choose to send for.” Christopher Columbus is requesting that King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella fund his journey. He promises to make them rich in return. This demonstrates how explorers, like Columbus, were seeking gold and other treasures when they began exploring.
As discussed in Columbus’s journal he states that they saw many plants and animals unlike the ones that were back home. From the perspective of a human during this time period, it would have been very different seeing animals that you have never even heard about. The new world was filled with many animals that did not live where Columbus came from, such as cattle or horses. The Europeans from the old world had never seen what animals could do when they were put to work. Let’s take a moment to look at what hard manual labor would be without animals, you would have to plow the field by hand, plant each seed by hand, and then when it was ready you would have to harvest the crop by hand.

Surprisingly, Loewen explains that these and other erroneous stories are learned through history textbooks. Dr. Jendian explained that these misconceptions, keep students unaware of the real nature of history. The purpose of the, Letter of Columbus, Describing the Results of his First Voyage, was to inform about his discoveries and formally claim new territories. Columbus wrote this letter to Luis de Santangel, secretary of the royal court of spain, and I think that Columbus just wanted to show off his accomplishments to the royal courts, especially to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabel. I believe that the reason Columbus wanted them to know about everything that occurred was because he was sponsored by them and he just wanted to show them that the voyage was successful and not a fail.
