It is easy to assume that both women in the portraits appear pregnant. If you look closer, you will see that both of their dresses are lined with fur, an indication of their social status. Their appearance is strictly a statement of woman’s fashion for that time. However, their dresses are also an indication that wealthy merchants and not the church commissioned both of these paintings, by Eyck and Vermeer.
