Chancelor Bennett, better known as Chance the Rapper, has made a sudden appearance in the world of rap since 2012 when he released his first album “10 Day”. Since then, Chance the Rapper has gained popularity with his albums “Acid Rap” in 2013, and most recently “Coloring Book” in 2016. Chance the Rapper is known for his quirky and free-flowing raps about things that are important to him, like his native city of Chicago, freedom, or even his faith. His creative process to make genius raps sometimes take weird directions and fully understanding how this artist makes music is very amazing.
The film Boyz N’ the hood follows the lives of a group of young African American men growing up in the hood where poverty, crime and violence are rampant. The three main characters are Darin (Dough boy), Ricky (Darin’s brother), and Tre. In this this film there are many schools of criminology’s that help explain the roots of the criminality portrayed.
In this essay, Hip Hop Stole My Black Boy by Kiese Laymon, is a story about two boys whose dreams was to become a hip hop artist. Even though their parents did not like the idea. Laymon, says that "But as hip hop moved from the boroughs to Compton in late 80's and early 90's, daring west coast soldiers, west coast sensibilities and west of us rappers seemed more in line with our reality" (Laymon 226). I think he was referring to the two boys, because they did not like the idea of living their home town and go to another city at first, but when they move from one city to another they did enjoy it after all. The word "Cipher" was mentioned several times in this essay.
“Hip hop: Beyond Beats and Rhyme” (2006), by Byron Hurt is a documentary which tells the hidden side of a today’s Hip Hop culture. The documentary was made in 2006 in the United States by a lifelong hip hop fun and lover Byron Hurt, who realized that each hip hop video has something nearly identical; therefore he decided to make a documentary based on music, politics of hip hop and its culture. The purpose of this essay is to show how Byron Hurt used his non-fiction picture to document hip hop culture from different angles and in what way he has presented his main point to the public. After a short outline of a plot and the background of the documentary, it will analyze the structure of the documentary and effects that are used in the documentary, and what effect it might produce on the watchers.

The film Boyz N the Hood is a story about life in South Central Los Angeles. The film was wrote and directed by John Singleton in 1991. I chose this movie because of its relevance to the course and how it reflects pop culture in that time period. The opening line in the movie “one out of every twenty-one Black American males will be murdered in their lifetime” really catches the audience attention (Nicolaides & Singleton, 1991). This movie goes into detail and shows the life of three young males living in the hood of Los Angeles battling a life surrounded by drugs, violence, and questions of race.
Over the years’ television has created scripted television as a realistic reflection of celebrities’ lives. Love and Hip Hop Atlanta is one of the most controversial shows on television. The show takes place in Atlanta, Georgia which revolves around several men and women who are associated with the Hip-Hop industry through affiliation with rappers, singers, and producers. Many see the show as an exploitation of African Americans and relationships as musicians, it does not show the realistic everyday lives of black people inside and out of the music industry.
The media has underrepresented Hip-pop by sending negative stereotypes towards teenagers. Therefore, the hip-pop cultures and movements of the 1880s through the 2000s had a negative impact on contemporary young African American identities. This is due to the fact that Hip-pop influences the youth to do better than being negatively impacted by the society. In addition, hip hop teaches the youth that social media is going to throw negative stereotypes, in which teens could be aware of. Furthermore, hip-pop allows African Americans to overcome stereotypes through expression of the music and culture.

As reviewed in class, many adult Americans used to think that Rock and Roll and it’s exponents were a “bad influence” to teenagers back on the days. It is important to point out that many social changes on that time were a result of sociocultural modifications around authority figures like the government, parents, school authorities, etc. With the influence of Rock and Roll, people started to question topics like: religion, politics, social structures and sexual statements and teens showed attitudes against any form of authority that tried to control them. After World War II, adolescents showed more violent attitudes against social statements at that time.

Hip-hop is an influential form of music that displays an artist’s honest and revealing story that many of the general public can relate to. One of the many songs that I can relate to is “Love Yourz” written by J Cole. The song talks about how Cole reflects on the most important things in life such as love and happiness. He realizes that the money and fame didn’t bring him the happiness he desired. To gain true happiness, he needed to appreciate himself and those that love him.
