My creative artefact as a response to the text Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury in 1953 is a sculpture, this sculpture I have created uses multiple mediums to explore the idea of Censorship and how the act of Individually vs Conformity is used. The model consists of a classical novel that has been charred, broken and burnt representing knowledge and history being destroyed with fake red, yellow, and orange cellophane flames engulfing the pages, yet among the ashes the defying words “Silencing” “Suppression” and “Truth” can be found emerging from the fire, this was done to mirror Guy Montag, the protagonist as he emerges from his role as a firefighter and defies as he takes on the role of an active seeker of knowledge. Montag, like most people in his society, operates under the assumption that they are happy. Their lives are filled with mindless entertainment, the constant need for thrill seeking, and a disregard for critical thinking. Clarisse's question forces him to pause and genuinely consider his emotional state. Ultimately, Clarisse's question becomes the catalyst for Montag's transformation. It sets him on a path of self-discovery and rebellion. He starts questioning everything he thought he knew, seeking out knowledge and experiences that are forbidden in his society. This quote however has a double meaning, not only does it represent Clarisse’s question, but the word “YOU” has been capitalised and bolded. This deliberate emphasis I have placed on the word you was done as a way to challenge the audience and prompt the viewer to consider their own thoughts and feelings about censorship and societal control. It places a shift in the perspective and evokes a sense of wonder within the audience, they are no longer just observers, they are now part of the
