In society, censorship is seen through the internet and media. Censorship is a complex issue that affects access to information and freedom of expression. Censorship raises questions concerning the boundaries of free speech and the control of information. Censorship is used by authors in a multitude of different types of literature to warn the readers of censorship in the world today. Especially seen when Bradbury uses the burning of books to warn the characters of censorship. Bradbury makes Montag grapple with censorship after his eyes are opened to how prevalent censorship is. Firemen burn books to restrict citizens from accessing information, and maintain the government's control over society. As firemen “They were given the new job, as custodians of our peace of mind” (Bradbury 73). They are “the focus of our understanding and rightful dread of being inferior, official censors, judges, and executors”. That’s you, Montag, and that’s me” (Bradbury 73). Bradbury argues that the citizen’s have a lack of education, because the burning of information prevents them from being educated on different issues, therefore preventing the sharing of information. Since the citizens are not educated, they cannot grow. Citizens have an insufficiency to create unique thoughts and perspectives on ideas. Consequently, they have a lack of independence because the people are not given the chance to become distinctive individuals. Therefore through ‘heit 451’ Bradbury verifies that firemen are used as censors to burn information, causing the citizen’s to have an absence of independence, growth, and perspective.
