The malcontent genre of dystopian fiction touches the heart of so many readers, and theses books are very prolific in modern society because they make lots of money. One example of this genre is Fahrenheit 451, and it takes on the tradition of the characteristics of dystopian fiction. The differences between dystopia and other genres, the characteristics that make up a dystopian novel, and the characteristics shown in Fahrenheit 451 are what composes up the basis of the dystopian reading community. To start off, dystopian novels are very different than other genres of writing. The definition of dystopia is, “an imaginary place where people lead dehumanized and often fearful lives.”(“Definition of Dystopia” web). Dystopian novels are written with some of the worst situations of all time set in the future, and they deteriorate as each story goes on. The society is usually very noncommunicative, and they only worry about their own survival. Dystopian is the opposite of utopia, the tranquil society that everyone dreams of. The authors make characters that are always being watched by the government. They have fear of unknown and ambivalent, and most of the time they are used to the environment they live in. In these books, the highest ranked person in the society is usually treacherous by hiding something from their people in who they rule, and they detain their people from that. The world today is extinguished from all characters, and the new, unhappy world is brought in for them to love in their own way. The main character, usually the protagonist against the dystopian society, usually is the one who wants to escape and be free and questions the world they live in.
