Burrough investigate about the use of censorship by the government and the their power over citizens which restricts individual’s freedom of thought. He states that the power the government gained through censoring certain materials is questionable and censorship is merely making people more sensitive towards censored materials. After meeting Clarisse McClellan he finds her outlook on refreshing. After the burning of an old women, Gus Montag develops a strong hate for his job and goes against it.
Later that evening, Guy’s wife has some friends over, and he reads poetry from a book to them. The freak out and run away. When Montag goes to work that night, the fire chief taunts him by reciting things as well and then takes him to a fire call- Guy’s house. Mildred had called the firemen on her own husband. The fire chief, Beatty, forces Guy to torch his own house.
Bradbury illustrates the oppression of governments that repress the circulation of knowledge to manipulate the subjects of their society into meeting the distorted expectations of the authorities. Ignorance and manipulation go hand in hand, so when Montag’s government realized their subjects are no longer willing to learn, they immediately took advantage of the populace’s cluelessness to rise to power. Bradbury expresses this phenomenon when he says, “Not everyone born free and equal, as the Constitution says, but everyone made equal” (Bradbury 62). Only weeks after the city’s demise Montag, Granger, and the others regroup at the ruins to discuss the forming of a new civilization. Granger begins to lecture about how transparency and literary competence will form the groundwork of a great nation. He proposes that the group of scholars should work together improve the infrastructure the city ruins. Montag and the rest agree, but the dark, ominous clouds and haze still loom. The group disbands, but Montag stays along with Granger.
