1. The main purpose of this chapter is to ensure the student understands the benefits and criteria of being a fair-minded critical thinker. This chapter explains to students about how to be a fair-minded critical thinker, by explaining the characteristics that a critical thinker has and giving examples of how a fair-minded critical thinker should be. There are various traits of critical thinker that students should understand in order to be a fair-minded critical thinker, based on the traits of discipline mind. Each of the traits contributes good quality of thought of the critical thinker. The traits will determine either the person is a good sense critical thinker or weak sense critical thinker.

The most important information in this chapter is the way we think and how we see or analyse our thinking in our view and in other people’s view. We must know what we are actually thinking to get to the solution on the right way. When we are thinking we must also consider what other people say about the issue to know what their opinion are so that we know in bigger view or in other perspective to have a correct solution. We cannot judge other people’s way of thinking as they may have more experience in handling difficult situations. If we take this line of reasoning seriously, there many implications of becoming a fair-minded thinker. A fair-minded thinker has a higher potential to acquire genuine knowledge over the course of own life. One will also have lesser false assumptions, taking things for granted and misconception that drive the one’s thinking, because the person is willing to put them to the test and examine them in the light of reason. This will lead a person to think at the highest level of quality and the person will eventually develop essential traits of the disciplined mind and the person indirectly becomes a good sense critical thinker. One will also gain and keep more friends, because one will tend to be a good listener and have fewer biases. As one develop reasoning abilities, one will also develop various type of skills and insights absent in weak-sense critical thinkers. If we fail to take this reasoning seriously, the implications will lead us in becoming a selfish thinker and sophist which is known as weak-sense thinker. One will never develop higher-level skills and the positive value of critical thinking as we fail to consider in good faith of others opinion that contradict from our own opinion as it lacks fair-mindedness and the essential traits of mind. These weak-sense thinkers might develop some intellectual skills such as skills of argumentation and may gain so success in getting their goals but they will not develop the traits of disciplined
