Rome was a very prosperous city for many years. They were a very powerful empire that had many inventions that helped with modern-day life. The fall of Rome prompted many different theories on how it even happened. The fall of Rome was caused by political corruption, excessive military spending, and environmental and public health problems. The first problem that caused the fall of Rome is political corruption. Caligula had many people tortured and murdered (Pax Romana guided notes). This shows that leaders who were brutal toward common people generated problems in Rome. “Attila swept through northern Italy. But he died soon after, and without his leadership, the Huns ceased to be a threat”(Techbook). This shows that Rome was falling without good leadership. This evidence shows us how political corruption could’ve caused the fall of Rome. Poor and cruel leadership was a main part of this corruption. “They also made military objects, such as helmets, from bronze, with protective neck and throat guards” (Rome Beginnings guided notes). The Romans spent lots of money trying to stay safe. This could definitely be a cause for the fall. “The Romans, unable to stop the movement of the Germanic tribes across their borders, offered some of them land in Roman territory and money to pay their warriors. In exchange, the Germanic tribes would declare loyalty to the emperor and protect a portion of the Roman Empire border” (Techbook). Rome had to pay German tribes and giving them land could’ve been very expensive which could lead to the fall of Rome. These pieces of evidence show us how excessive military spending could’ve prompted the fall of Rome. Trying to protect everyone the best they could be a big part of this spending.
