"Running for His Life" In the story "Running for His Life", Michael Hall explains the genocide Gilbert Tuhabonye experienced when he was in high school in East Africa and how he managed to escape and relive his life in Austin, Texas. Tuhabonye's teachers and the Tutsi teenagers were burned alive and beaten to death by friends of theirs. A couple of students tried eluding, but we're caught and killed by the killers. What would you do if your secrets were exposed? This is one question posed in the 2017 mystery/thriller book One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus. The book follows four high schoolers in detention when another student dies of an allergic reaction. The four are suspected of murder, despite trying to save him, after it was discovered all of the EpiPens were removed from the nurse’s office. While they are being investigated, posts begin to appear on Tumblr claiming credit for the death, and four posts appear revealing a major secret of each student.
The short story “A Wall of Fire Rising” by Edwidge Danticat has one of the several important settings, and it is the hot-air balloon. This air balloon belongs to the sugar mill owner’s son and catches everyone’s attention. Moreover, it has a great influence on one of the main characters of the story, the Guy, and it seems to be on his mind all the time. Every time he and his family walk across the sugar field, he stops by the fence which separates the air balloon from curious people and stares at the balloon for a while. Even his wife notices that and feels like the Guy is lost to her as he sees it, she sees him completely immersed in his thoughts (Danticat 238).

On September 11, 2001, tragedy struck the city of New York. On that fateful day, two airplanes were hijacked by terrorists and flew straight into the twin towers. Each tower fell completely to the ground, taking thousands of lives with it and injuring thousands more. Not only did that day leave thousands of families without their loved ones, it also left an entire city and an entire country to deal with the aftermath of the destruction. Linda Hogan is a writer of Chickasaw Native descent and often incorporates “Southeastern tribal histories and [native] spirits and culture” (Wikipedia contributors) in her work. “Tear” takes on the perspective of a Chickasaw Native, first in the past recounting hardships, then to the present to reflect on the speaker’s connection to others in her tribe. The poem also describes the environment that surrounds natives and the neglection of their lives.
