The qualitative article, Sacrifice for the sake of the family: Expressions of Familism by Latina Teens in the Context of Suicide, is written by Allyson Nolle, Lauren Gulbas, Jill Kuhlberg, and Luis Zayas. The research problem in this study was to investigate the relationship between familism and adolescent suicidal behavior in Latina teens (Nolle, Gulbas, Kuhlberg, Zayas, 2012). This research is important to a counselor because Hispanic population is growing, and it is the duty of the counselor to understand their culture and values in order to better serve this population. Also, the 24 Latina teens were all from New York City area and nowhere else (Nolle, Gulbas, Kuhlberg, Zayas, 2012). Since this was a qualitative study, it did offer a more depth understanding of what type of sacrifices are made by Latina teens to assist their families and not only the correlation between Latina teens and the familism. Unfortunately, The study does lack more research and a larger sample to be a potential piece for publication. Overall, the study was interesting and went more in depth than a quantitative study, but a larger and more varied group of Latina teens is needed in order to relate to more Latinas outside of New York City. The author would also suggest for the interview questions that were asked to be share. The data was explained, but there was no display of the results. The table would have made the data more comprehensible and offer more support to the study being done. Overall, this research would beneficial to counselors so they can understand Latina teens and the role their family plays in their life.
