Analysis of Single Types of Family Violence Victimization and Externalizing Behaviors Among Children and Adolescents
The article being analyzed is Single Types of Family Violence Victimization and Externalizing Behaviors Among Children and Adolescents by Lynette M. Renner (2012). This article studied the effect of abuse either inflicted or witnessed by a child and the externalizing behavior that is the result of it. Renner purpose for this research was to show that siblings that witness abuse exhibit the same externalizing behavior as the abused child. She goes further to explain that in some age groups the externalized behavior is worse in the sibling witnessed the abuse. The next subsection is the Direct Victimization: Child Maltreatment in which “three types of were measured in this study: (a) child physical abuse, (b) child neglect, and (c) child sexual abuse” (Kenner, 2012, p. 181). The third subsection is Indirect Victimization: Exposure to IPV this is self-report instances of abuse for the last 12 months. The seven measures for indications of physical IPV were adapted from the Massachusetts study of women on welfare, the Conflict Tactics Scale and the Women’s Employment study. If any on these seven items were checked then it indicated the presence of physical IPV. For psychological IPV an eight item scale was used that was adapted from the Women’s Experience of Battering scale. If any of the items had been checked this indicated that there was psychological IPV. The final subsection is Indirect Victimization: Exposure to Child Physical Abuse in which a child was considered exposed to sibling abuse if born before CPS intervention for this a dummy variable was created which was 1-exposed and 0-not exposed to sibling abuse (Kenner, 2012, p. 180-181). The final methodology is the data analysis
