Childhood abuse is like being on a rollercoaster; you are in the hands of the controller and do not know when it is going to end. Abuse comes in many forms and has many side effects that tag along. Throughout this essay, it will follow three forms of abuse: physical, sexual and emotional and will pinpoint/focus on symptoms, long term vs short term effects and statistics in society. “Any abuse can cause children to have elevated risk behaviour. Not all children will or can experience these, but there may be an increased liability for it to happen” (Childwelfare 2). Long-term effects of physical abuse include: arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, sexually transmitted diseases; where sexual abuse was part of the physical abuse, obesity and chronic pain syndromes. Many of these injuries can affect the victim as they grow older. The short-term effects of physical abuse are more obvious and can be treated by the hospital, physician or other healthcare provider. This includes: forcing a child to take part in pornographic pictures or videos, having sexual contact with the child; kissing in a sexual way which leads to having sex, making phone calls or sending emails, texts or other forms of messages in a sexual way, showing the child their genitals, showing pornography and telling dirty jokes or stories (WebMD 2). These acts of sexual abuse can cause a child to develop symptoms of: eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia, complaints of stomach pains or headaches, having trouble sleeping, bowel disorders, and genital or rectal symptoms, such as pain during a bowel movement or urination, or vaginal itch or discharge (Healthyplace 1).
