The year 1619 marked the start of the darkest chapter in American history. It was the year the first 20-30 African slaves stepped foot on American soil. In the following 242 years approximately 12.5 million slaves were brought to the U.S. When Africans were brought to America, they were treated as less than human. However, despite all the pain and suffering they were put through, they helped build the U.S. into the country it is today. The 1619 project, published by the New York Times, edited by Nicole Hannah-Jones in 2019, is a collection of essays, pictures, articles, etc., that gives a more in-depth explanation of African American history.

Whitney, you won 't believe what happened to me on the island after I fell off the boat! I am lucky to make it off the island. I am glad you did not have to come to the island, it was a mess! First of all, when I fell off the boat I swam to where I heard those gunshots.
The story David from Foreign Soil by Maxine Beneba Clarke is a short story looking into the lives of a little boy's life in Sudan, the life of his mother now living in Melbourne, Australia, and a young single mother of Sudanese descent. The story displays the theme of how our personal stories are interwoven and that we are better because of this. Clarke explores the idea of our stories being interwoven and connected in many ways. Maxine Beneba Clarke weaves the story together purposefully; an example of this is "the shiny cherry red pedal bike," which is significant to two of the main characters for different reasons. The reason for the younger woman is that it’s been a childhood dream of hers to own a bike like that, and for Auntie, the significance of the bike is that it reminds her of her son David, who also owned a bike.

I have always wonder what it meant to be educated. There are some many different definitions out there for what it means to be educated for example Merriam-Webster dictionary describes being educated as “having an education; especially: having an education beyond the average” others such as Eliot Butler have stated “An educated person is one who is by his or her own initiative and discipline is consciously, vigorously and continuingly learning” (n.d., pp. 14). I feel like in a why both of this statements could be true, but to me to be educated means having a combination of street and book smarts. So what does it mean to street and book smart?
