“Death may be the greatest of all human blessings” (death) - Socrates. The book, Bridge to Terabithia, by Katherine Paterson should not be banned from school libraries across the nation. There are multiple reasons why this book was banned, but the reasons are not good enough. The book was challenged because of cursing, death, and atheism. The reason this book should not be banned is because of the important lessons that are within this book. The lessons in this book are that people have different views, and death is just a part of life.
Based on a poll by “SixWise”, in America, “74 percent of women, and 60 percent of men, are bothered by profanity at least some of the time” (Profanity) . In this book, Jess’ dad curses only a few times and only when angered or aggravated. When he does curse, it is not used in bad manner toward someone to make them feel down about himself. It is simply a part of his dialogue. After Leslie’s death Jess throws his painting materials into the ground and his dad says “That was a damn fool thing to do” (Paterson 115). Hearing a couple cuss words in a book is no reason to ban the book when they are going to hear it even more outside the book in everyday life. …show more content…
