URBS-110 Semester Project Faribault, Minnesota is my selected city because it was where I was born and raised. Considering the fact that my entire childhood took place in this city, it means a lot to me. The city of Faribault Is a very comforting and friendly place. The population is very diverse and connected with one and other. Faribault is the only city that I feel I truly have a feel for and that’s why it has so much significance. Faribault was founded by alexander Faribault when he was brought to the area in 1826 by the Sioux Indians. Alexander Faribault first built a log cabin in the area to use as a trading post. The most distinctive would be the downtown business district which also includes all of the Rice county government buildings. The eastern side of the city would be the main residential district where a large of the population resides. There is also a very large industrial district along the northern edge of the city which also contains the sanitation plant. Otherwise, the rest of the city is very mixed as far as commercial and residential areas. Most residential areas contain a recreational district as well. This includes parks, golf courses, trails and athletic fields. Main street located in Faribault is the main node in the city, this is where festivals are held annually and where people converse and shop. It seems this part of town is always filled with people going about their daily business in harmony. This portion of the city also has many unique and diverse dining options making it the place to be. The city also had another main node along Lyndal Avenue where the towns largest gas-station as well as Dairy Queen is located. The commercial market is extremely diverse and well put together. The city is filled with local small businesses and includes some bigger businesses as well. Commercially Faribault does not hold many big-name establishments. However, there is enough options in the market to satisfy the community’s needs and wants. Faribault does have a shopping mall which has been struggling economically for years.
