Chapter 7 of Fast Food Nation discussed the starting of meatpacking industry and its downfalls. At first, Iowa Beef Packers (IBP) used the same principle as McDonald’s principle to make fast foods. IBP hired unskilled workers just to do simple and repeated work all day. However, competition with other companies made IBP low wages and health insurance options. This caused slaughterhouses to move West to gain cheap labor and land.

In “Don’t Blame the Eater” by David Zinczenko, kids are suing McDonald’s for making America fat. Zinczenko asks, “Whatever happened to personal responsibility.” At the same time he sympathizes with people who do eat fast food because he used to do the same thing, making him obese. He fortunately realized how unhealthy fast food is and the toll it takes on the body. Conventional wisdom is that we should not eat at a fast food restaurant twice a day.
In David Zinczenko’s essay “Don’t Blame the Eater”, the author shares his sympathy for a group of young people suing McDonalds for making them fat. Zinczenko makes a point that the surplus of fast food chains and the amount of advertising they are allowed has a serious effect on today’s youth. He goes on to argue his stance that the “eaters” are not to blame. His tone in the article struck me as if he was accusing those who hold unhealthy eaters responsible for their own actions as “victim blamers” who lack empathy and the understanding of how the food industries work. I felt as though he was coming off as too defensive and a bit arrogant.
Throughout part I of Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser writes about the ins and outs of the fast food industry. From the founding fathers to the dirty little secrets that fast food corporations would never want us to know, he reveals it all. As corporations look for every opportunity to cut costs and increase profits, we start to reexamine what type of behavior governs businesses in America. As the days of traditional ‘sit down restaurants’ dominating the market quickly disappeared, large corporations are making use of new machinery and money saving business strategies. The drawback to these business tactics is that the burden lies on another individual.
In the article, “ Don’t Blame the Eater” by David Zinczenko’s, he explains that it is not the children’s fault for eating fast food but the companies who keep expanding in local areas where it is-easier-for children to get a taste. Zinczenko agrees that it is not healthy for the body and it is a worldwide problem that most families are facing today. The villain in this true story is the industries that do not stop making these unhealthy fast food for children and spread advertisement all over the media. Don’t blame the eater, blame the government to make more strict rules on a healthy environment.
No matter where people go, there are always a fast food restaurant or vending machines filled with unhealthy products everywhere. A Yale University psychology professor states, “While you’re pumping gas you punch in Fritos, the Twinkies and the Coke, and somebody brings it to your car. So the physical activity required to go in and get is eliminated.” (Murray). Fast food industries make it difficult to prevent obesity from local communities, since fast food restaurants are placed at every corner.
Eating out can be a fast, easy way to get a meal quick. But do we really know what is going in our bodies? Through research the numbers for a typical meal at Chick-Fil-A was found a recorded and also an alternative meal was found and recorded. The amount of total calories for typical meal at Chick-Fil-A is 1270 calories and my daily estimated calorie needs for one day is 2188 calories. As seen, research was done on an alternative meal which consists of 690 total calories.
The book, Fast Food Nation, by Eric Schlosser, is about “The Dark Side of the All-American Meal”. Fast food in America is not as good as it seems. Most customers don’t know that by eating this food, they are putting their health at a serious risk. You only see the good side of things, but never the bad. Fast food chains are now in control.
“As a culture, we no longer discuss healthy eating without also discussing unhealthy weights…eating too much-often without any parallel warnings against eating too little…overeating constitutes ‘the greatest threat’ to our survival” (Maxfield 444). The main point in both of these articles that both authors agree with is the fact that people don’t add up all their calories they eat daily, which should be less than or equal to 3500 calories. When you go to a fast food restaurant, usually a normal “healthy” person would get a salad, large drink, and a side item like fries; this normally doesn’t seem like a lot of calories, but then you add the dressing and this healthy lunch turns out becoming an unhealthy 1700 calories already in one meal. Not only is fast food a lot of calories, but it is really cheap too, and most people spend their money on this instead of eating healthy and spending more money. “Americans spend less than 10 percent of their income on food; they also spend less than a half hour a day preparing meals and little more than an hour enjoying them” (Pollan 439).
Author, Eric Schlosser, in his nonfiction exposé, “Fast Food Nation”, reveals the sickening truth about the fast food industry. Schlosser’s purpose is to expose the secrets that the fast food industry hides. Schlosser utilizes a serious tone, shocking diction, and exact details to educate his audience on the fast food industry. Throughout his book, Schlosser adopts a serious tone to communicate the facts to his audience.
According to recent polls, approximately 3% of Americans admit to consuming fast-food at least once per day. This number, although it may appear small, it accounts for 9.5 million citizens across the United States who are unashamed of chowing down on a quick meal. Unfortunately, due to this consumerization, obesity and other like-minded illnesses have risen in recent years. The effects are costly and capable of making people pay the ultimate price: their life.

According to the American Franchise Corporation, certified by TrustArc, fast food companies generate $570 billion annually in the United States ("Fast Food Industry Analysis"). These statistics continue to rise as more and more fast food companies become ubiquitous. As a result, fast food companies get richer, while people contract life-altering health effects.
