“Fate is the path that leads to the future and cannot be altered no matter the outcome” (Unknown). Fate can be two-sided, either bringing contentment or sorrow. In Romeo and Juliet, fate brought suffering and formed tranquility between the two rivaling families. Although, Romeo’s and Juliet’s lives ended tragically, there were also other characters impacted by this inevitability. The irrepressible fortune of Friar Lawrence, Tybalt, Mercutio, and Capulet foreshadowed the destiny of Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare uses foreshadowing in Romeo and Juliet to emphasize fate is an uncontrollable force that impacted all the characters throughout the play. Fate began to establish the path of Romeo and Juliet when an illiterate servant asked Romeo to read the guest names on a Capulet’s party list. If the servant did not ask him to read the names, Romeo would not have had attended the party, and would have missed the chance to meet Juliet. Before Romeo entered the party at the Capulet’s house, he sensed an unknown danger, “I fear too early, for my mind misgives some consequence, yet hanging in the stars”(I. IV.106 -107). Lawrence’s servant did not make it in time to give Romeo the imperative letter talking about the plan of Juliet faking her death. This one change in event was predestined to happen and affected the outcome for the lovers. Not only did this determine their death through the foreshadowing that took place of Romeo not getting the vital information he needed it formed a whole long chain of negative events. This lead to Romeo saying “Then I defy you, stars,” as he opposed to this negative destiny, and tried to defy it. He does so by killing himself with poison. Therefore Romeo’s suicide prompts Juliet to kill herself, thereby ironically fulfilling the lovers’ tragic destiny which is what fate wanted all
