Fate In Yoon's The Sun Is Also A Star

Carl Sagan once said, “If you make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe (2).” This can be seen in all aspects in life, like literature. If you want to create a book you must first create the universe, then the trees, then the machines to make the paper, and the printer to print it, and so on. In The Sun is Also a Star, Yoon shows that the main characters are guided by fate when Daniel and Natasha first meet, when they mysteriously got to spend more time together, and how they are a perfect match. Throughout the novel, everything is controlled by fate. When Daniel and Natasha first met they didn’t have enough time to spend together, saying, “You can have one hour” (46). Subsequently, both of their meetings got postponed, and took place in the same building. The purpose of both of their meetings were very distinct from each other, yet it happened at the same building, out of thousands of buildings in NYC. Not only that, but they both were scheduled on the same day and got adjourned. This, “coincidence,” wasn’t really a coincidence. This was fate taking its course. In addition, Daniel said, “You see? I’ve been right all day. We were meant to meet. If we hadn’t met earlier, we would’ve met now” (129). This states that their meet was inexorable because even if they never met on the street, they would’ve seen each other in the building. Fate would have always played out in their favor.
