Father Pedro Arrupe

Father Pedro Arrupe said “our prime educational objective must be to form men and women for others, who believe that a love of self or of God which does not issue forth in justice for the least of their neighbors is a farce.” Fr. Pedro Arrupe was a man committed to justice. He was stationed in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb hit, and dedicated his time to help the wounded. This possibly informed his thoughts on the matter. While the atomic bomb was without a doubt an amazing scientific achievement, it couldn’t be used without bringing up big moral questions. He stayed true to his word by his actions.

Father Arrupe was talking about how the main goal of teaching should be to shape the students into good-hearted people who do things for others who otherwise wouldn’t be able to do it themselves. His point is that hypocrisy in religious people is ridiculous. If one talks about doing good deeds and loving God, they should walk the walk. People who claim to be religious, but take part in actions similar to the Westboro Baptist church, is what he's talking about. Despite preaching that they love God, they picket and protest funerals for soldiers. These actions are utterly disgraceful.

Some colleges pitch that students can get advanced degrees and high-paying jobs. Father Arrupe says that’s not enough, that education should value moral teachings just as much. My goal is to be to not only an intelligent person, but to also be a moral thinker. However, it’s not enough just to think about others, you must act according to your words. Intelligence or wealth without morals isn't great. Kanye West seems to be a great example of someone who is just aiming for material success, but at least he's not a hypocrite. The goal of his teachings were to have people think morally and critically. One thing that I love about my high school is that they emphasize moral teachings just as much as good
