In a broad sense abuse of any kind is life threatening act done to a very young child. To be physically or sexually attacked at a very early age is easily seen for what it is. However, even more so the child’s perspective must be understood. A child, who is hit, kicked or raped by an adult, if under the age of two, will experience this fear of impending death. To understand the intensity of this experience, reflect on the relative size comparison between a baby and an adult.
Go to a standard basketball ring and stand under it; look up and imagine that this is the size of a person. Now double the size of this imagined person and add on another 0.8 times the original height of the ring to get a real comparison between an infant and a fully developed adult. That is imagine a person 2.8 times the size of a basketball ring abusing you. This giant would surely have the ability to kill you. The fear of impending death is terrifying. Children experience this fear and it is appropriate for the situation they find themselves in.

Unfortunately, in childhood much physical abused is delivered as a form of punishment. The belief a thorough spanking will do the child some good. ‘In the good old days ‘spare the rod and spoil the child’ was the motto; even schools condoned this violence with the use of canes. Hitting a child was accepted and encouraged as a way to teach the child how to behave. Well hitting a child is nothing more than a big person hitting a little person. The lesson that is learned, if there is a lesson, is that if you want someone to act in a certain manner and if they are smaller or weaker than you, the way to do this is to hit them.
