Alcatraz The prison Alcatraz lying just off the San Francisco Bay held some of the most terrifying, dangerous, obstreperous felons. These men were assassins, thieves, and unmanageable inmates from other penitentiaries. Alcatraz was a military prison in 1886 and then was a federal prison from 1933 to 1963. The living conditions for the prisoners were harsh. The prisoners went through the same schedule every day and if they didn’t follow regulation, they were sent to spend isolation for days,weeks, or even months. Prisoners slowly went insane as “The Rock” beat them down to nothing. Thirteen escape attempts involving 33 men all ended tragically. They had used spoons to chisel a hole behind the ventilation vent in their cells. The escapees had made fake covers for the vent using cardboard. The three men would chisel for while and then cover their progress with the fake vent. To avoid their empty bed being seen, they had made paper-mache like heads to place in their beds. On June 11 they decided that night would be when they escaped. At light out that night Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers managed to place the dummy heads and get out the ventilation vent, Allen West never made it out of his cell. The 3 men climbed the shaft and went on to the roof. From there they did finishing touches to their escape, grabbed their materials and made their way off the roof and down to the water. With a makeshift pump they filled their handmade raft and went in the water. They were never seen again. Because Allen West was not able to escape, he cooperated with officials and told them the escape plan. According to video 1. After making it to the water, they were going to head for Angel Island, swim through a waterway called Raccoon Straits, then on to Marin. Rachael Van Miller Anglin (the mother of John and Clarence) was receiving anonymous flowers ever mother’s day. At her funeral (in 1973) two women, in every long dresses and heavy makeup, showed up for the services. They didn 't talk to anyone and were gone before anyone talked to them. SFGate.com claims that a suspicious picture taken by Fred Brizzi (a friend of the Anglin’s) was given to the Anglin family. The FBI matched the two men in the picture to John and Clarence Anglin. When Fred was questioned he claimed that he took the picture when he bumped into the men in Rio De Janeiro. Police reports provide information that numerous people have called them claiming to have seen the three felons, but no report has lead to them being
