Feminism is defined as “the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes,” according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Today, many people do not have a satisfactory understanding of the concept of feminism to truly define it. Feminism can mean many different things to many different people; there is not one simple definition of feminism, like the dictionary has defined. If people in today’s society better understood the modern definition of feminism and feminism’s historical significance, they would recognize the need to stand up for feminism in demonstration of human rights.

Most people who responded to the survey defined feminism as equality among men and women. One response in particular, described feminism, from a woman’s standpoint, very well, “Feminism to me represents strength and unity. Women are united together as they fight for equality. Women defy the odds together and fight for what they believe in and deserve. Feminism is being all woman and doing whatever. Not being limited by society's oppressive views. Women can do anything they set their minds to.” The only problem with this response is it paints a picture of “all-woman” feminists. This of course is not the case, in reality, all people can be feminists. All of the participants thought that everyone, including men, women, LGBTQIA, people of color, and people of different religions can all be feminists. Many of the participants said that to be a feminist, one has to speak out and make big moves to show that they care about equal rights. One interesting response to this question stated, “I tend to think of feminists as people who are angry or who feel the NEED to be defensive regarding the treatment of women.” Being angry
