Feminism in the United States
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, feminism is defined to be the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, economical, and social equality to men. Beginning in the late 1800’s, feminism has been a big part of the world. For centuries women have been trying to achieve equal rights between men and women. Feminism in the United States progressed of equal political, economical, cultural and social rights for women, However women still are not represented equally in the positions of power. Political action among women began in Britain with Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) for the right to vote. Countries with more rights for women lead to more spending and attention to health development and children economically, which should be considered an economically beneficial development. Women in high income countries have more rights over land, whereas countries like Yemen, women have little to no economic rights. Although, as of now, there are no countries with complete economic rights for women, the United States has a 83:100 ratio for women rights. In low income countries, parental authority lie mostly in the hands of the father, according to marriage rights. In countries like America and Switzerland, divorce laws that cover parental authority lie equally for mothers and fathers. “Sons are strongly favored over daughters in low income countries” (Warner. 1053). In court, fathers can take full custody over the sons and leave the daughter and mother with nothing. Polygamy is non-existent in high income countries such as Norway. In Many middle-eastern countries, it is socially and legally acceptable to practice polygamy, whereas there are no countries in the world where polyandry, the act of a woman marrying several men, is allowed. Today, women make up more than half of the world’s population and yet they only make up 15% of the world’s workforce. For every dollar a male makes, a female only makes 87 cents. Why is that?
