The history of EMS is extremely interesting, to think that a service that is expected to respond to an emergency at the ring of a phone, was once just something used to remove injured soldiers from the battlefield. Imagine the amount of people who died from the simple common cold or infection, to the practice today of identifying and treating strokes and cardiac arrests. Bringing the “White Pages” to identify the need for a cohesive response to the dangerous highways of the states opened the door for the basic and advanced life support providers of today. EMS has come a very long way, but still has much further to go. For many reasons, ambulance services and providers are reluctant to submit field information to regulating agencies to be used within a national database. Hopefully, information sharing will be mandated by state and governmental regulation requiring all agencies to participate in the national database. This information will be utilized to study field medication administrations, evaluation effectiveness, and improve patient care (EMS WORLD). Educational platform used for the past thirty or so years will also change. As we move forward, there is already a positive change to a national standard, which brings all states educational requirements into a uniformed standard of care. There is also a large push to flip the classroom for innovative teaching ideas, minimizing the use of slides or boring lectures. A more rounded classroom to benefit the domains of learning, as well as effective learning techniques to reach the different types of learners identified within the classroom (NAEMSE) Another positive change will include legislation and regulation of the EMS systems. Hopefully, the government will mandate EMS as an essential service as done prior to the fire and police services.
